Website Photography: Professional Tips for a DIY Approach

You do not need a studio or expensive kit to get website photos that feel authentic. Within the last 10 years, almost all small businesses can make great images themselves with a good iPhone and some planning. The aim is not perfect, but clear, consistent and reliable. The Best DIY Hacks

Turn off harsh ceiling lights (just use natural light)

Taking photos near windows is one of the quickest ways to get better pictures

Place the light facing on your subject

Stay out of direct midday sun (harsh shadows)

Avoid yellow indoor lighting, and turn it off to eliminate strange colour casts

If you are able to, shoot on a bright but slightly overcast day – it is the most universally flattering light.

Keep backgrounds simple

Cluttered backgrounds will make your photos look busy, or “cheap”. Before you shoot:

Get rid of the small things (cords, mess, other odds and ends)

Plain walls, clean work areas or neat natural backdrops

Muted brand colours (a little is fine, a lot is overwhelming)

Be authentic and show real people and real work

Stock photos can look generic. What builds trust is proof.

A smiling profile picture (or two) – A friendly headshot

You working (intern, hands-on shots)

Before/after photos (where relevant)

The tools, van, premises or processes you use

Shoot for images that resonate with people: What is the experience of working with you?

Shoot for the crop

There are quite a few shapes that websites can have such as banners, squares or portraits for example.

Mix of wide, mid and close up shots

Ensure text overlays have some ‘empty space’ on one side

Step closer – zooming out degrades quality.

Soft editing (filters are the most important)

Photos look staged with just a little editing

Straighten lines

Increase brightness slightly

Reduce yellow tones if needed

Consistent style throughout your website.

Try to keep it light, filters are great but heavy ones will age quickly and might make skin tones look weird.

Back to the Basics – Sharp, sturdy and clean lens

Clean your lens before you start every shoot

Tap to focus on the subject

Use both your hands for holding the phone (or a tripod which can be bought quite cheap)
