A dim kitchen can seem smaller and less welcoming than a bright space. The dullness may be due to decoration, fittings or a lack of natural light, but there are things you can do to brighten the space. Here are some ideas.
Lighten up
Whether you’re planning a complete kitchen refurbishment or just want to make a few changes, think about the colours that you use. For example, lighter coloured cabinets will instantly chase away dullness. Think neutral, off-white and pale grey shades to reflect light.
Reflect on things
In a similar way to light colours, shiny and reflective surfaces will bounce light and add brightness. Try out a kitchen refurbishment with light-bringing touches such as shiny metal taps, appliances, cabinet handles, and light fittings. Gloss cabinets will also make a space feel lighter, along with marble, granite and quartz worktops.
Mirrors are another great light-enhancing trick and can also be a style statement when used as a hob or sink splashback. Alternatively, simply place a mirror opposite a window to reflect light around.
Colour pops
Pops of colour will add extra brightness and complement light-coloured cabinets and dazzling worktops. You could even use darker coloured cabinets, but contrast them with ultra-light shades on floors and walls to ensure the feel is still light and airy.
Light it up
Lighting is an important consideration if you want to brighten up your kitchen. You might just need to replace bulbs with brighter alternatives or add extra lighting to get rid of shadowy areas.
There are lots of choices for kitchen lighting, from over and under cabinet lighting and ceiling spotlights to plinth or recessed lighting. Never underestimate the importance of lighting design when it comes to a kitchen refurbishment.
Clear clutter
This may simply be a trick of the eye, but a clear, clutter-free space will often look lighter and brighter than a packed area. It is also better to avoid complex patterns if lightening up the kitchen is a priority. Opt for light-coloured furniture with clean lines.
