Galveston is a port city and coastal resort on the Gulf of Mexico. Getting to and from Galveston is an easy matter as the Galveston to Houston shuttle runs daily. Once you get there, there are plenty of fun things to do whether you’re traveling with family, friends, or a significant other.
1. Moody Gardens
Not sure if you want to visit a water park, museum, theater, or aquarium? At Moody Gardens, you don’t have to choose. It’s fun for families with kids and educational for everyone.
2. Galveston Island State Park
For people who enjoy outdoor activities like fishing, camping, hiking, or biking but want to avoid crowded beaches, Galveston Island State Park can provide a more natural experience. Additionally, it provides outstanding opportunities for birdwatching. The Travel Channel named it one of the top 5 best beaches on the Gulf Coast in 2013.
3. Bishop’s Palace
Named one of the 100 Most Important Buildings in America by the American Institute of Architects, Bishop’s Palace is a beautifully preserved Victorian mansion. Guides are available to take you on a tour, or you can take the self-guided option. Besides Bishop’s Palace, Galveston offers seven other tours of historic buildings.
4. Stewart Beach
Altogether, Galveston boasts 32 miles of beaches, so it should be an easy matter to find one that suits your individual tastes. Stewart Beach ranks high on the list of recommended beaches in the area, especially for families as alcohol is prohibited. If you aren’t able to bring your own umbrella or beach chair, Stewart Beach has rentals available, as well as other amenities like a playground and concession stands. Admission is free, but parking costs between $10 and $15, depending on the day and the season.
5. Pleasure Pier
Pleasure Pier is located at Seawall Urban Park, in close proximity to Stewart Beach. It is a classic seaside amusement park where you can play midway games, ride a Ferris wheel or roller coaster, and more.
