There has never been a better time for the promotion of diversity within the workforce, however in some industries, gender inequality or underrepresentation is still an issue.
Whilst within the construction industry, women represent 15% of the workforce; many of these staff have administrative or clerical roles. On construction sites, women still only represent 1% of the total workforce.
Women in Building Roles
It is estimated that the building industry needs around 239,000 new recruits over the next 5 years. This is to ensure that the supply of new housing is covered. Initiatives are in place to ensure that the shortfall in numbers are taken up by women, in order to bridge the gender gap.
The Home Builders Federation has collaborated carefully with both local and regional home builders to deliver the Women into Home Building Initiative. This involves offering fully funded site management placements, with a focus on improving access to leadership roles within the sector.
The programme has grown in strength each year, with this years’ cohort now having the largest number of available placements.
