The sewers underneath the UK are dark and mysterious places – many of them are still in use from the Victorian times, and these dark, dingy and dirty places are an intriguing mystery to most of us. The only people who really get to see into this dark and dingy world are the workers who keep them in working order – installing drain lining, unblocking pipes and building new sewers. So what might you find in the murky depths of the British sewers….?
Rats – These ingenious creatures have made their homes in the sewers – this is the perfect environment for this industrious mammal, as it provides them a dark and safe place to raise their young, as well as easy access to the human waste which they thrive on.
Fatbergs – A modern day problem that lurks beneath many cities are fatbergs. Theses monstrous structures are formed from things that should not really be in the drains in the first place. A culmination of oil and grease, as well as wet wipes, nappies and sanitary products causes these to form and eventually block up sewers.
Lost Pets – The sewers and drains are often places where lost pets can be found – there have been many rescue missions embarked on to retrieve an over curious cat or an impulsive dog from a sewer pipe, where having found their way in they become scared and stuck, so need help to be freed.
