But what are the most common items that get stolen?

Bicycles – Bikes are one of the most stolen items and it’s probably because they are most likely stored outside the home. If a shed or garage isn’t secured, bicycles are easy pickings for thieves and with some bikes worth thousands of pounds, it can be a real bonus for the thief. When buying a bike, make a note of the frame number and take photos of the bike along with one of you and the bike. This helps to make identification easier in the event it is stolen. Consider bike chains and padlocks, as well as securing all outbuildings.

Power tools – These tools are expensive and often left in garages or vehicles, again making them an easier target than breaking into a house. Golf clubs and gardening tools are also commonly stolen goods as an unsecured shed is too inviting to resist for thieves.

Jewellery and watches – These are items that are easily sold on and can be very valuable. As well as jewellery and watches, any small portable devices are also a target. Don’t leave laptops or mobile phones visible through windows and consider CCTV to act as a deterrent.
